2011 Perth Fashion Festival dates announced!!!!!!!!!!!!!!





Fashion fever will sweep Perth from 21 – 27 September 2011 with the return of Western Australia’s premier fashion event, Perth Fashion Festival (PFF).






PFF has flourished over the past 13 years. It is a breeding ground for Australia’s most sought after creative talent and is considered a must-attend event on Australia’s fashion calendar.






“We have exciting new events and venues planned for the PFF 2011 program. Perth can expect to see the very best the dynamic and vibrant WA fashion industry has to offer,” PFF Director Mariella Harvey-Hanrahan said.






“Perth Fashion Festival is one of the most important annual events for WA's creative industries and we are delighted to welcome it back to the City this September,” Lord Mayor and PFF Ambassador Lisa Scaffidi added.






PFF is supported by the State Government, through Eventscorp and the Department of Culture and the Arts, as well as the City of Perth.






Eventscorp Executive Director David van Ooran said PFF had become an integral part of Western Australia’s diverse events calendar.






“Not only does the Perth Fashion Festival add vibrancy and excitement to our State, last year alone more than 44,000 people attended; 11,000 more than 2009.”






In the first of a series of exciting new events on the PFF 2011 calendar, Perth’s fashion set will be the first to view WA designer, Kym Ellery’s Spring Spring Ready to Wear (RTW) ‘11 collection.






The invitation-only event showcasing ELLERY’s Spring RTW ‘11 Collection will be shown at one40william on 29 March.






“We are honoured that Kym has chosen PFF as the launching pad for her new collection. It is testament to the fact that Western Australia is becoming increasingly recognised for the unique flair of its local designers and talent,” Ms Harvey-Hanrahan said.






Further information on PFF 2011’s new program of events and venues will be released in coming months.

I thought that I hadn't done one of these types of post for quiet a while, so here it is my  ♥'s for today the 7th of October.

The Fringe and Bob

This is a hairstyle that is eternal, it comes in many styles; 2008 saw razor sharp blunt lines which by 2009 turned  into messy boho chic layers as the fringes grew out.

Now as we come towards the end of 2010 and near 2011 we see the fringe and bob return in a much sleeker retro form, I am talking 60's/70's glam! A slight blow wave of the ends of the hair flicked in or out, with a un-polished finished, the fringe varying in lengths all dependant on your style and face shape.

Fall '11 Boots

Fur lined boots!? No not Uggies, real shoes.

 Ok so I am the first to admit when I had a friend describe these to me upon her return from O.S, I screwed up my face and said "What did you say, did you just say furline boots?"Followed by a bahahaha as the first image that came to mind was bogans walking down the streets in short denim skirts and ugg boots ala Pamela Anderson style before she was a spokeswomen for PETA.

I then went online and discovered these babies (see below). Now I understand what my friend was talking about, and I can see why European Fashionistas have fallen head over heels for them.

I don't know about you but now I can't wait for Autumn/Winter '11! By the looks of things it is going to be a (faux) furtastic season!

I am a BIG fan of this little lady and her label: Zoe Trotman, is the face behind the label Lonely 8-bit heroes. I had the pleasure of meeting Zoe recently at numerous PFF events. Her designs are bold, beautiful and creative, she knows how to push boundaries.

Instead of falling a victim to fashion, Zoe exudes a confidence and a style of her own which is expressed through her incredibly innovative label, from the customised shoes and kicks to the most ASTONISHING lycra bodysuits and tights you will ever see, Lonely 8-bit Heroes is not for the faint hearted!

Q's & A's with fellow Vintage Lover- Liz Power

I have a slight penchant for vintage clothing, which I am positive stems from two things; my obsession of playing dress-ups as a child and later on in my early teens trawling through the back of my my mum's closet, looking for the clothes that she wore when she was my age.


Here I found hidden treasures, silk hand made singlets and matching jackets, designer 1980's power suits, sequined mini dresses, long flowing boho chic dresses, amazing hand printed skirts, minis, fluro green spandex  tube dresses,  you name it she had it.


After stumbling across these little beauties my first thought was, "yes new wardrobe for me". Those thoughts quickly dispelled, when I tried to squeeze into the clothing, me a size 10 could not fit into a size 6-8 ( did I mention my mother was a models for majority of her life, hence the sizing) for me it just wasn't going to happen.


Thankfully not all of the garments were itsy-bitsy, I did manage to find some (which she must of had worn on her"fat days") that I could fit into.

These items remain in my closet still today, I simply adore them. There is such a noticeable difference between clothes made 30-40 even 50 years ago compared to those that we purchase from stores today. Just having these items still hang in my closest proves that they stand the test of time, not to mention the quality of the materials used, the precise stitching, the figure flattering cuts, the time and effort that had been put into perfecting these designs. The list could go on as to why I love Vintage and prefer vintage over today's mass produced items that flood our stores.


Which brings me to my encounter with the lovely Liz Power, the lady behind the online Vintage Store "Awoke on a Whale Heart". We met via FB when I placed a call out for local designers/ boutiques who wanted to dress me in their threads for a T.V interview that I was giving. Liz ended up lending me 20 gorgeous dresses, all unique and intriguing. I had a hard time choosing which one to wear, in the end I opted for a red number with a zip up front with a cute little gold sailing ship on the zipper clasp, I felt great a perfect fit! 

Before giving the dresses back to Liz I decided that I needed to own at least 2 of them, at $40.00 each they were a steal! When I did end up taking the dresses back to Liz I noticed that she had a bunch of newbies hanging up, she explained she was in the process of taking pics to upload onto her online store. I was curious just, where did all these wonderful treasures come from?


I had to know more, so I asked...

How did Awoke on a Whale heart begin?


Awoke began on hiatus in Europe. I saw all these great vintage stores and markets in Berlin, Copenhagen & London and thought I wanted to bring a slice of the vintage pie back to Perth.


Where is the name derived from?

I grew up on the South West Coast so spent a large majority of my childhood at the beach. I had this ongoing fear that I would be accidentally swallowed up by a Hump Back, hence waking up on its heart.
But the name is such a mouthful, I regret making it so long. I’m trying to change it to Awoke Vintage, but I’m predicting that might be about as successful as when I was nine years old and I tried to get everyone to call me “Libby” instead of Liz.


What era/price point do you carry?


I carry a mix of eras and most of my stock I try to price under $50. I guess my main differentiation is in where my stock comes from. A lot of my stock originates from Japan. So the dresses are petite and stylish. I also come across some really great tag names such as, “Sanyo” – before theymade TVs they made dresses!, “Victoria & Albert Museum” and “Styling Girl”.



How often do you buy for the store--is it the same schedule/process as most buyers?

I am always on the look out for stock, I can’t drive past an op shop without wanting to stop. But I do a lot of buying trips overseas as well as visiting deceased estates.

Tell me about the Vintage sales that you hold, how were they established?

I established the very first sale to fund my trip overseas, and when it proved to be a success, (albeit a little busy) I decided to make them a regular thing.


I also like that vintage markets are a great way of cutting out the middle man, which means buyers can get vintage cheaper than they might in a retail store.



What vintage item should every woman have in her closet for SS 10/11?

Hmmm ok I might have to make a list!

Clogs, a good leather jacket, a pair of cut off 501s and a feminine minidress. Also going “Bra-man-doe”. Not wearing a bra. Not exactly vintage I guess, although perhaps a little reminiscent burning the bra in the 60s?

A really good tan leather handbag & tortoise shell sunnies.

I guess the greenie side of me would say that…


Buying vintage is a really good way to keep up with the trends, but at the same time you are reducing your carbon footprint because you are reducing, reusing and recycling clothes worn by past generations. If that 60s smock has lasted the last 50 years, it is a testament to its quality. I cringe to say this because it’s something my dad says all the time, but… “they don’t make ‘em like they used to.”

Wheels and Dollbaby @ Perth fashion Festival

Monday Nights Wheels and Dollbaby catwalk show for Perth Fashion Festival was nothing short of spectacular, the star studded event attracted prominent figures in the front row including, The Graduate star Rider Strong, Luke Wyllie and Samantha Druce, Eileen Bond, Dixie Marshall, Malcom Day and Bree Maddox, photographer Thom Kerr, Premier Colin Barnett's son Sam Barnett and stylist Des Eddy.

The night kicked of in true Rock Star style, with designer Melanie Greensmith husband Divinyls guitarist Mark McEntee taking to the stage accompanied by Roddy Radalj from Hoodoo Gurus, Kevin Reeves of Nitro Vane and Primal Scream drummer Paul Mulreany, belting out a rendition of “Make you Happy”.

Melanie Greensmiths muse/model Tiah Eckhart opened the runway show, wowing the audience with a silk chiffon leopard print cocktail dress.

The SS10/11 collection is full of 50's/60's inspired garments; soft well-fitted pastel floral  dresses,  black lace cocktail dresses and shirts, animal print carpi's & dresses, leather short shorts and pedal pushers and of course the signature Wheels and Dollbaby Cardi's.
